Transformers 3 gets Alan Tudyk!

Alan Tudyk

Transformers 3 is still surprising me with their casting choices! The most recent actor to join the cast of the Transformers franchise is the ever lovable Alan Tudyk. Granted Tudyk’s career has been taking off quite nicely in the past couple of years, he will always hold a place in our hearts as Wash from Firefyl/Serenity.

He will be joining returning cast members Shia Labeouf, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, and Tyrese Gibson. The fun doesn’t stop there as numerous high level stars have also been confirmed including John Malkovich, Frances McDorman, Patrick Dempsey, and Ken Jeong.

Transformers 3 (with no subtitled yet) is set to hit theaters July 1, 2011.

This movie is sure to be seen by everyone and could mean some serious exposure for this amazing and underrated actor. He’s already worked with some of the biggest names in Hollywood in films like A Knights Tale and 3:10 to Yuma. Keep your eyes peeled fans, ’cause our boy ‘s career might be on the verge of blowing up!

Trailer Watch: The Adjustment Bureau

Look at this! It’s pretty awesome…

This is probably one of the coolest trailers I have seen in a very long time. From the second this thing started I thought, “Oh politician gets caught up in an affair with a woman and chaos ensues.” Granted, that’s exactly what is going on, but not in the way you may think. There is an organization called the Adjustment Bureau and they watch everything and make sure the world goes “According to Plan.” This drama has some science fiction edge to it and I couldn’t be happier. This sort of reminds me of the Matrix in the way that you will start to look at the world around you in a much different light.

I haven’t been this excited about a trailer in a LONG time. Emily Blunt is destined to become a big star and she is definitely on her way up!

Trailer Watch: Super 8

Please watch the trailer here.

J.J. Abrams is back with his newest film, Super 8. Once again, the renowned creator had left us shrouded in mystery. We don’t actually see anything concrete in the trailer, nor have the slightest clue about what this is really about. This is what J.J. does. I swear the man could put together a trailer that shows you nothing, while spending the next two years making the movie and we would still be interested! Although I am not one of those fans that bows at the Altar of Abrams, I am interested in what he comes up with. Finding out what the monster was in Cloverfield nearly killed me.

As this is Area 51 related, this can only mean one thing… ALIENS! Also, Super 8 is a motion picture film format that was released back in the mid 1960′s. This film will most likely surround not only what is in the train car, but also what was captured on film and has since been confiscated by the United States government. It looks creepy and interesting. More please?

The Chronicles of Narnia continue!

The tales of Narnia will continue in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader!

I feel like I’ve been living under a rock. Empire has posted pictures of a massive wrap around advertisement for the the film that has been erected just for the Cannes Film Festival.  Check out the pictures here.

Back in 2005 when the Chronicles of Narnia was launched it was sure to be a huge success. The first film, The Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe did very well at the box office, prompting Disney and Walden Media to continue with their franchise. Sadly, their joint production of The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian was not as big of a hit. Consequently, Disney pulled out of funding this film as well as any future installments.

I had thought that faith in the book series turned film franchise was gone. How wrong I was.

I very enjoy the films and the books are literary classics. Be on the look out for the newest installment this Christmas!

First glance at Green Lantern villain!

With Warner Brothers Green Lantern filming this summer, I’m sure we are all eager to see what they may have in store for us.

Behold, a first glance at the villain Hector Hammond:

Peter Sarsgaard as Hector Hammond

Well this just makes me giggle in a way that I can barely handle. Out of context this picture makes you think, “WHAT THE HELL?!” Don’t worry movie goers, this make-up is actually very true to the original comic book villain. It’s odd, yes. I love that he is out of costume and walking around. Chances are the guy just go out of the make-up chair.

Favreau hints at Iron Man 3

SHOCKER!

Jon Favreau with Robert Downey, Jr.

The Director of Iron Man and Iron Man 2 is already hinting at Iron Man 3.

As of now Marvel Studios has a grand master plan in mind for their Marvel Universe characters. Next summer will be the release of Thor and The First Avenger: Captain America will be released the following summer. This is all going to lead into the highly anticipated Avengers movie.

With that being said, Iron Man 3 would be a little far off the map for now. Robert Downey, Jr. is sure to make cameo appearances in the next two films and a lead for Avengers. Can they please do something that will merit an Avengers 2 and have a civil war story line?!

Regardless of what is in store for Tony Stark in Avengers, Favreau (along with everyone else on the planet) would like to continue the solo story-lines of Iron Man and his allies. He even has a particular villain/story-line in mind:

“You have to do The Mandarin,” he said. “The problem with The Mandarin is, the way it’s depicted in the comic books, you don’t want to see that. He also has 10 magical rings, and it just doesn’t feel right for our thing, so it’s either tech-based or the rings are not really rings. But maybe with ‘Thor’ and all those others you’ll introduce magic to that world and it won’t seem so out of place.”

I couldn’t agree with this man more. The Mandarin IS Iron Man’s main villain. He’s the Joker to his Batman. If you recall, he is mentioned indirectly in the first film. Remember the terrorist who kidnap Tony Stark and their mention of the 10 Rings? If this is the route they are looking to take, this could kick off an entirely different direction for the films which would be nothing short of awesome. As long as the team stays on for these flicks, I’ll be at the midnight showings!

Now the question remains, who would be the perfect guy to be cast as the Mandarin?! Any thoughts? I love casting ideas and I’m open to any suggestions.

Joaquin Phoenix Documentary is still a mystery!

Remember when everyone thought that Joaquin Phoenix had completely gone off the deep end?

Joaquin Phoenix

There was a time in the not so distant 2009 when Joaquin Phoenix went on The Late Show with David Letterman and explained that he has quit acting to pursue a career as a rapper. He had grown a beard and was acting as strange as strange can be. He spent an entire year in pursuit of this dream, with his brother-in-law Casey Affleck catching it all on camera for a documentary.  There were reports of his performances and none were positive. Much speculation surrounded the entire project, people were unsure if this was an elaborate joke or for real.

Last week, there was a screening of the film at the offices at William Morris Endeavor and people are still stunned and confused by the final product. Both Phoenix and Affleck have remained serious about the subject, but their is still doubt in the air. Is this joke? Or is this Phoenix finally going off the deep end in a genuine attempt at a rapping career? Either way, they are still in the throws of getting a distribution deal for the flick.

Personally, I think Phoenix and Affleck are smarter than people are giving them credit for. Have people seriously forgotten all about Andy Kaufman? This is a man that regularly messed with people with his characters that he always claimed (literally to the grave) that there were separate people. Joaquin Phoenix is a well respected Hollywood actor who is having a little too much fun and taking it the extra mile.

It has to be a hoax! As far as distribution deals go, it may be hard press to sell this as a TRUE story. I think the real money would be in the vein of Borat. If you go into that movie knowing the Joaquin messed with all these people, that might be interesting. Then again, maybe not.

Breaking Dawn to split from Ashley Greene & Kellan Lutz?

Fans will rejoice and get pissed all at the same time with this bit of news!

Kellan Lutz & Ashley Greene

After much speculation, it looks like Summit does want to turn the final Twilight film, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn into two movies. It’ll allow for more story to be included and if you’ve read the book series you know that there is a lot to get through in the final installment. Now Summit has an opportunity to bank on five movies instead of four.

While everyone is set, including the director, Robert Pattinson, Kirsten Stewart, and Taylor Lautner there has been a wrench thrown into the works. Ashley Greene (Alice Cullen) and Kellan Lutz (Emmett Cullen) have yet to agree to the fifth film.

I can only imagine that back in the day when their contracts were initially negotiated, they had agreed to only four films, not five. Now it’s renegotiated time for their representation and the studio and they have yet to come to an arrangement. There are a lot of factors involved, especially for these young rising stars. If they agree to a fifth film, it means they will be taken off the market again for some time. With their careers starting to take off this presents a big issue. Naturally, they would try and get more money out of the deal, but sources are claiming that the money they have been offered (compared to that of their co-stars) is “offensive.” Please bare in mind they are represented at the same agency; there is a very good chance they will be a package deal.

It presents an even bigger issue for Summit as Lutz and Greene play big characters for the series.

While I am confident that Summit will figure this out of everyone’s liking there is still a chance that they will walk away all together just to make a point. Everyone remember what happened to Rachelle Lefevre?

If they are replaced there is definitely going to be trouble in River City.

Iron Man 2 **Theatrical Review**

Iron Man 2

PG-13

2 hours, 5 minutes

Starring: Robert Downey, Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell, Mickey Rourke, and Samuel L. Jackson.

Warning: This review contains spoilers!

Iron Man, Iron Man, does whatever an iron can… wait…

The blockbuster of 2008 has a sequel, which should be a blockbuster of its own. Robert Downey, Jr. returns as Tony Stark only 6 months after revealing to the public that he is Iron Man. Naturally his life has become even more lavish and complicated with the added celebrity, but it’s no picnic for Tony. The miniature core reactor that keeps him alive is failing and starting to slowly kill him. With little options open to him, he starts prep for his death. This includes even more reckless behavior as well as handing over his company to Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow). The government is breathing down his neck, his Iron Man technology is being replicated, and people are out to destroy him, namely Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke) and Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell). Even his best friend takes a suit and turns it into a War Machine.

Being a avid Marvel fan and movie goer this was probably one of the strangest movie experiences of my life. The entire cast is lovable and Robert Downey, Jr. is all that you can hope for and more as the complicated Tony Stark. I went in hoping for the best, but for the majority of the movie I found myself sitting there thinking, “Wait… what?” The whole movie is slow with each scene going into the next moment without building into the next moment. It also suffered from the classic “Sequel-Syndrome” that adds too much character, too much attempt at story, and not enough character development. There was a lot of ad-lib, I understand that is how RDJ rolls and I appreciate it but I started to wonder if there was even an initial script to start with.

The villains are severely under developed in this film. Aren’t villains supposed to be scary? Sam Rockwell turned Justin Hammer into a extremely passive character. While he is a business man, I feel like I could kick his ass.

Ivan Vanko’s little origin story at the beginning completely killed all of the mystery of the character. The main plot rests on the Iron Man technology and that it won’t be replicated by anyone else for at least 5-10 years. Now, wouldn’t it have been way more interesting/scary if the first time we see Ivan is at the race track? This guy has the technology and no one knows why, plus he’s Russian, quiet, and scary. His backstory is something that the audience should’ve discovered along with the characters.

Some of the character motivations don’t add up at all. The best example to James “Rhodey” Rhodes. During Tony’s hearing in Washington D.C., he makes a point to stand up and protect his friend. Then somehow, after Tony gets drunk and starts blasting is own home with the suit, Rhodey decides to put on one of the spare Iron suits and battle it out with Tony. We all remember how long it took Tony to figure out how to use the suit in the first film. Now, Rhodey can just put it on without any trouble and easily use it? I don’t think so. After his tiff with Stark, he takes the suit to Justin Hammer to outfit with better weapons. Aren’t they supposed to be friends? They didn’t exactly have an actual falling out. Personally, if I was Tony Stark I would be PISSED.

Here’s where I get confused. The movie seems to pander on and on and then something happens. When the film kicks into the third act it suddenly turns into the good movie that I should’ve been from the start. I’m still don’t quite understand why Ivan would not wear his protective helmet during the climax of the film. Granted he may be over confident that he is going to win, but he’s not stupid. The end saves the movie, period. As frustrated as I was during the film, the ending almost made me forget about the whole thing. Something clicked in my head during the final battle scene (which was AWESOME) and I thought, “That’s what I’ve been waiting for.”

The anchor of the film doesn’t lie in the action sequels, but in the relationship between Tony Stark and Pepper Potts. Anytime that they fought or bantered, it felt like pieces of the first film had been captured and carried into the sequel. As self absorbed as Tony Stark can be, when it comes to Pepper he is able to put her first. They are the heart and soul of films.

Marvel is definitely creating their cross-film universe. There was something about Iron Man, War Machine, and Black Widow all working together that felt a little bit like going home for Thanksgiving. Marvel stays very true to its characters, characters that the fans have all come to know and love for over 50 years. Keep your eyes peeled for references to their upcoming films.

Remember, stay after the credits. I giggled.
