This is one the coolest things I have heard in a long time!
IMDB.com is reported that the Best Picture nominees will be expanded from 5 films to 10.
This was announced at a press conference from the Oscar’s President Billl Gains.
According to Gains, it will allow the opportunity for a wider variety of films to be honored. Granted there can only be one best picture, but like the saying goes, “It’s an honor to even be nominated.”
This seems like a such a wonderful opportunity for the future of film recognition. I don’t know about you, but I feel like so many good films get overlooked year in and year out. Dark Knight was easily one of the best films to come out last year. When I would recommend it to people I would say, “Go see it. It’s not just a good Batman movie, it’s a good movie period.” However, the art house films will always go before comic book movies and that’s the truth. I am confident that Dark Knight would’ve made the list if 10 films were on it.
While animation got its own category, comedies have been left high and dry. There are plenty of comedies that are amazing but are snubbed by the dramas and the tear-jerkers come Oscar time. This change will bring all kinds of movies into the forefront and I’ve never been more excited.
Interesting way for the studios to slap the ol’ “OSCAR NOMINEE” sticker on their DVDs in the future.
I dislike this. Next thing you know all runners up get little mini Oscars like when kids play sports.
Studios slap have been slapping the “Oscar Nominated” sticker on their DVDs for years. It’s a good advertising tool, but it certainly isn’t anything new.
Not anything new, but now more titles can take advantage of that little sticker/banner. This also allows certain people to say “I was nominated for x amount of awards” and get paid more money. Not really thrilled with this decision.
Overall I feel like this is a really good move for the Acadamy. There have been many times where movies that really should be in the running just did not have a chance. Maggie brings up some solid points.
My only reservation about this is when there is a bad year for movies and we all know there have been bad years. We will be getting a lot of sub par nominations when there are 10 spots.
Not a big deal but in the long run those nominated movies may not even be close to best picture quality yet they are in the running.
